I’m Tilly, a graduate student at St Antony’s College. As part of my undergraduate degree in History and Spanish I was fortunate enough to do a year abroad where I spent five months studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I developed a growing interest in Latin America. This coincided with Javier Milei’s presidential campaign and eventual election, which led me to explore how the memory of the National Reorganisation Process is invoked and used in a variety of contexts. Consequently, in my undergraduate dissertation, I looked at the role of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, from their foundation to the present, in shaping collective memory and influencing political rhetoric and social narratives in Argentina. At the LAC, I hope to further explore how the memory of authoritarian regimes and the processes of democratisation continue to influence Argentine governance and society, perhaps through comparisons with other countries in the region.
