Rafael Mesquita is a journalist, political science PhD student at UFPE (Recife, Brazil) and an Associate Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute (Hamburg, Germany). His thesis compares the foreign policies and regional strategies of three regional powers (Brazil, South Africa and Turkey) from the 1990s to the 2010s and is supervised by Prof. Marcelo de Almeida Medeiros. By gathering original data on these countries’ diplomatic activities, the study will assess how central their own regions have been in their foreign policies and whether the regions have, in turn, granted them the status of leaders. Rafael has published in journals in Brazil (Contexto Internacional, RBPI and BPSR) and abroad, on the topics of Brazilian Foreign Policy, Regionalism, BRICS countries and the UN. He is visiting the LAC during Michaelmas term 2017 under the supervision of Prof. Timothy Power. Prior to Oxford, Rafael visited Sciences-Po in Paris and the GIGA Institute in Hamburg.
