As a Mexican, I have had the privilege of calling Latin America my home. Latin America is at the heart of issues relating to climate change, politics, economics, human rights, and technological innovation; however, our region is mostly overlooked. Whilst I pursued my undergraduate degree in International Relations and Modern History at the University of St Andrews, I developed an interest in decolonial theory. Thus, under the supervision of Dr Rahul Rao, I wrote a dissertation that explored narrative and identity imposition in Mexico during the colonial period and its implications in current USA-Mexico international relations.
During my time at the University of Oxford, as a member of St Antony’s College, and as a student of the Latin American Centre pursing an MSc, I plan to refine my research skills and continue exploring the long-term implications of colonialism in contemporary Mexico. I shall work towards writing a dissertation that deepens my understanding of the use of coloniality of language and narratives, and the way they impose an identity of primitiveness and backwardness upon the peoples of Mexico.
After the MSc, I aspire to achieve a PhD in History.
