My research interests focus on political economy, in particular the negotiation of power in public policy making and implementation in relation to participatory governance, mining and infrastructure. In this I draw on my prior career as a UK civil servant and my doctorate in Anthropology (Goldsmiths, University of London) which considered how and with what effects funds originating from mining taxation were spent by a local government in the Northern Andes of Peru.
I am currently working with Professor Diego Sánchez-Ancochea at Oxford Department of International Development, researching the formalisation of artisanal and small scale mining in Peru, asking why attempts to formalise mining have had limited success and considering alternative strategies.
I also trained as a photographer (LCC, University of the Arts, London), and use imagery as part of an ethnographic method.
