Latin American Film Series 29/04 NO - | Meeting-Join | Microsoft Teams
This collective project, led by students of the MSc in Latin American Studies and supported by the LAC, aims to foster discussion on the political, social, and economic realities of Latin America. It seeks to create a space for critical reflection, using cinema as a privileged medium capable of capturing reality with the depth and aesthetic richness of the seventh art. It also aims to strengthen the dialogue between academia and the wider community, fostering closer connection between these two spheres.
No, directed by Pablo Larraín, portrays Chile’s 1988 plebiscite as a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic transition after Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, emphasising how mass media and advertising strategies—centred on optimism and collective hope—played a decisive role in shaping political perception, mobilising citizens, and ultimately enabling a peaceful shift towards democracy.
Juan Cristobal Peña is a Chilean journalist and author known for his investigative work on the Pinochet dictatorship and its lasting social and political effects; his career in major media outlets and his focus on memory, violence, and power make him particularly well-suited to analyse No, as his expertise helps contextualise both the historical process of Chile’s democratic transition and the crucial role of media in shaping political narratives.
