I am a postgraduate student at St Antony’s College, taking the MSc in Latin American Studies. I hold a degree in Politics and Spanish from Durham University, during which I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach English in Costa Rica, as well as study for a semester at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia.
The region of Latin America has captivated me ever since I first learned about the brutal rule of Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay, and the role that the United States played in propping up his authoritarian regime. This in turn led to my discovery of Operation Condor, the US-backed campaign of right-wing dictatorships and political repression throughout Latin America during the Cold War, a topic on which I wrote my undergraduate dissertation, and an area in which I am looking to further research here at the Latin American Centre.
