As members of the University of Oxford’s Latin American Centre (LAC), we are following the events associated with the appointment of the new Director General of the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) with great concern. The way the process has been handled, as well as recent statements and decisions by the incoming authorities, endanger academic freedom, collegiality, and the strict but transparent peer-review mechanisms that have allowed CIDE to become a leading social science institution. We value our links with members of CIDE’s thriving intellectual community, many of whom studied at Oxford or spent time here as visiting scholars. We respectfully urge those in positions of authority to create the conditions for a productive dialogue with students, faculty and staff so that CIDE can continue producing cutting-edge research and providing world beating education to students from all backgrounds, as it has been doing for many decades.
