The Latin American Centre together with the Instituto Mora in the context of the CAF-LAC agreement is organising the conference “Democracia, política anti-sistema y desigualdad en tiempos turbulentos” to be held in Mexico City, Federal District, on 13 March 2017.
The conference will explore the relationship between inequality, democracy and the emergence of anti-system candidates across the world in recent years. Inequality creates obstacles to social cohesion, contributes to political polarization and weakens democratic institutions. In turn, political polarisation together with globalization and the recent economic crisis makes pro-equity interventions harder than ever before. Our aim is comparative: while focusing on Latin America, we are looking to explicitly discuss other parts of the world.
The plenary will be delivered by Adam Przeworski and will have three other panels:
· The growth of anti-system politics in democratic contexts
· The links between anti-system politics and inequality
· Options for reducing inequality in the anti-politics era
