Maria Puolakkainen is a doctoral researcher in Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations and a member of Nuffield College. Her research is motivated by the persistence of extreme economic inequality, and she working on the politics of trade shocks, industrial policy, and dual labour markets, with a regional focus on Mexico and Brazil. In her work, she combines causal inference, experiments, and qualitative interviewing. Previously she worked on the political dimensions of criminal governance, especially territorial contests and public goods provision in Brazil and Colombia during her time at a violence research institute in the region. She completed her MPhil in Latin American Studies at the LAC in Oxford in 2022.
