Susanna Hecht is one of the founders of the analytic approach known as political ecology. A specialist in the American tropics, especially Amazonia, her many articles and books include several classic award-winning volumes on the Amazon, including The Fate of the Forest, and The Scramble for the Amazon and the Lost Paradise of Euclides da Cunha (winner of the Elinor Melville Prize for Latin American environmental history). Her work has been supported by the MacArthur, Guggenheim, Hewlett, and Ford foundations as well as through research awards from NASA and the Swiss and US national science foundations, among others. She is also an active member of the Science Panel for the Amazon, a scientific and policy organization.  She is currently working on a contemporary history of the Amazon, from 1988 to 2025.
