The book traces Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's remarkable five-decade journey from poverty and union activism to Brazil's presidency. Although Brazil has shifted to the right since Lula was first elected back in 2002, he remains popular and may well win a fourth term later this month, and the book assesses the reasons for this.
Richard Lapper is a journalist, writer and consultant who has spent much of a 45 year-long journalistic career covering Latin America. He was editor for Latin America at the Financial Times between 1998 and 2008. Lula! The Man, the Myth is his second book. Beef, Bible and Bullets: Brazil in the Age of Bolsonaro was published by Manchester University Press in 2021. It was a Financial Times political book of the year and was described by the Economist as one of seven essential books to read on Latin America.
