Lucas is a MSc student in Latin American Studies at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford. He is of Brazilian origin and grew up in the Washington DC area as a dual citizen of the United States and Brazil. The 2022-2023 academic year will be his sixth consecutive year living in the United Kingdom. He completed his undergraduate education with a Master of Arts (Honours) in International Relations and Philosophy at the University of St Andrews and then went on to complete a Master of Letters in Management, also at St Andrews.
Lucas’s academic interests are in contemporary and historical nationalist movements in Latin America with a special focus on Brazil. He is keen to explore the implications of various competing visions of national identity and their implications on the political economies of Latin America. This research will further understanding of the challenges of development and nation-building, while also generating valuable information concerning the respective economic trajectories of the various nations in the region.
