Introduction:

Diego Sánchez-Ancochea is University Lecturer in the Political Economy of Latin America and a Fellow at St Antony’s College. He is based in the Latin American Centre and Queen Elisabeth House. Before coming to Oxford University in October 2008, Dr Sánchez-Ancochea taught five years at the Institute for the Study of the Americas (University of London). His research concentrates on state-society relations, income distribution and production regimes in small Latin American countries, with particular attention to the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and other Central American countries. He is currently collaborating with Juliana Martínez Franzoni on a study of the interactions between production and welfare regimes in Costa Rica and is also working on a book that analyses the opportunities and constraints for the creation of development-friendly social coalitions in Central America. Dr Sánchez-Ancochea is Associate Fellow of the Inter-University Institute of Latin America at the University of Salamanca, co-chair of the Economics and Politics section at the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and has been a consultant for UNDP and the ILO. Dr Sánchez-Ancochea received his Ph D in Economics from the New School for Social Research (New York) and his MPA from the Instituto Ortega y Gasset (Madrid).
