Visiting/Recognised Students

VISITING STUDENTS: Affiliation with a College

In special cases colleges may admit students who wish to study in a particular subject for one year and to become members of colleges but not to read for degrees of the University. The college accepting a Visiting Student arranges for the student's tuition and supervision. Visiting Students are entitled to attend lectures in the University and to use the University libraries. The status may be held for a maximum of three terms. A period of study as a Visiting Student cannot be counted as part of the residence requirement for any degree or diploma of the University. For further information see: Visiting Students

RECOGNISED STUDENTS: Affiliation with a Department (e.g. the LAC)

Introduction

Students registered for a PhD at a university outside the UK and conducting postgraduate research on Latin America who want to do research in Oxford without registering for a degree of the University (including Brazilian students with a Bolsa Sanduíche from CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP etc) can apply for Recognised Student status with any department or faculty of the University, including the Latin American Centre.

It is possible to apply to be a Recognised Student for 1 term minimum and up to a maximum of 3 terms (or 1 academic year). There is no formal course of study or formal association with an Oxford college with this status and Recognised Students are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Oxford. Recognised Students may use University libraries and can attend lectures and seminars with permission. Admission is at the discretion of the Latin American Centre Management Committee, which is responsible for appointing the student’s academic adviser.

Term dates for the 2012/13 and 2013/14 academic years are as follows:

Term 1: Michaelmas 2012 7 October 2012 – 1 December 2012
Term 2: Hilary 2013
15 January 2013 – 9 March 2013
Term 3: Trinity 2013 21 April 2013 – 15 June 2013

Term 1: Michaelmas 2013  13 October 2013 - 7 December 2014
Term 2: Hilary 2014
19 January 2014 - 15 March 2014
Term 3: Trinity 2014  27 April 2014 - 21 June 2014

If admitted by the Latin American Centre, you will be allocated an academic advisor, who will give general advice about the research topic, but not systematic instruction, as you are expected to be sufficiently well advanced in your studies to undertake research largely unsupervised.

How to Apply
The recommended application deadlines are:

For EU/Swiss Applicants:
For admission in Michaelmas 2012:        3 August 2012
For admission in Hilary 2013:                1 November 2012
For admission in Trinity 2013:               1 February 2013

All Other Applicants:

For admission in Hilary 2013:                1 September 2012
For admission in Trinity 2013:               1 December 2012

Please note that it is your responsibility to check how long it will take to obtain a Visa in your country and to plan the submission of your application accordingly.

You should ensure that the start of your stay corresponds with the start date of any particular academic term.

In order to start the application process, you should contact the Admissions Secretary of the LAC (enquiries@lac.ox.ac.uk) and send the following documents:

1.
Evidence of the degrees you have previously obtained
2. A 500-1000 word statement of your research proposal in English
3.Reference letters from two senior members of faculty at your current University
4. A letter of application, including the dates you would like to be at the Latin American Centre and with details of secured funding (source and amount)
5.English language competency (if you intend to apply for a Tier 4 visa; please see specific requirements below)

If the Latin American Centre is able to support your application, and has an academic advisor available to provide appropriate supervision during your proposed visit, you will then be asked to complete the application form and we will send you a letter of support from the Latin American Centre. You should then send all the completed documentation together to the Graduate Admissions Office, PO Box 738, University of Oxford, Wellington Square, OX1 9FB, United Kingdom.

Thereafter, you will receive a formal offer letter specifying the terms for which you have been admitted, as well as a student contract. This should be completed and returned to the Student Information & Advisory Service, Examination Schools, High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BG before you arrive at Oxford.

It is not possible to be admitted as a Recognised student if you have already been matriculated as a member of the University of Oxford.

Visa Information for International Students (last updated: 13/07/11)
If you are a non-EEA /Swiss national, then you have two options for visa entry into the UK.

Option 1:
Come to the UK as a ‘student visitor

Under this option you may stay in the UK up to six months, but no more (e.g. October to March, or two academic terms). You would not be allowed to take any employment in the UK, and you would not be able to stay any longer than six months, or to transfer to another programme of study.

Option 2:
Apply for a ‘Tier 4 (General) student visa

Under this option you may stay in the UK more than six months (e.g. a full academic year). However, you will need to take one of the recognised English language tests to prove to us your ability in English. The University requirements for English language are as follows:

  • IELTS: An overall score of 7.5, with at least 7.0 in each component
  • TOEFL: An overall score of 630 with a Test of Written English score of 5
  • Computer-based TOEFL: An overall score of 267 with an essay-writing score of 5

You will be need to send us your original English test certificate.

Planning Ahead
As soon as you receive your Offer Letter, you will need to start applying for your visa. On your request, the LAC will arrange for a Confirmation of Acceptance to Study (CAS) number to be provided to you.

It is recommended that for detailed information about Tier 4 Visa and Student Visitor Visa, you consult the UK Border Agency website.

Information and advice on visas and immigration is also available on the University’s web pages for students, or by emailing: student.immigration@admin.ox.ac.uk

Finally, in line with requirements from the UK Border Agency, you must have your passport scanned when you report to the Student Information & Advisory Service on your arrival. If applicable, you should also ensure that you register with the police.

Fees
Recognised students must pay tuition fees.

This covers the cost of the access to the University facilities and the cost of the guidance provided by your Academic Advisor. Tuition fees do not include college fees (as you will not be affiliated with any college), accommodation, or other course and maintenance fees. Fees must be paid within fourteen days of the start of Full Term and failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your admission. You may pay for more than one term at a time if you wish.

The fee for studying at the Latin American Centre (Area Studies) as a recognised student in 2011/12 is £6,350 (for three terms).
